This adventure is perfect for energetic, physically fit trekkers seeking to elevate their mountain experience beyond traditional hiking. Even if you have little or no mountaineering experience, this journey is an ideal introduction to high-altitude climbing.
At the heart of this expedition is Thorong Peak, an emerging climbing destination in the Annapurna region. Your climbing journey begins with one of the world's most renowned treks– the Annapurna Circuit. This challenging route takes you through the diverse landscape of the Annapurna Conservation Area, from lush forests to high-alpine valleys. You'll immerse yourself in the rich Gurung culture, witness stunning mountain vistas, and test your endurance as you cross the formidable Thorong La Pass.
The Annapurna circuit and Thorong peak climbing is an exciting 18-day journey that combines trekking and peak climbing. This adventure begins in Kathmandu, where you'll get an opportunity to explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Afterward, you'll drive to Jagat via Besisahar on the third day to start your Annapurna circuit trek. As you begin your trek from Jagat, you'll pass through several Magars and Gurung hamlets. The trail takes you to Dharapani, which is where the Annapurna Cirucit and Mananslu circuit trek intersects.
As you gain altitude, you'll notice the villages highly influenced by Tibetan culture and religion, offering you a diverse cultural experience of the Annapurna region. Continuing along the trail, you'll reach Manang, passing through Chame and Pisang. On the way to Manang, you'll make a short detour to Braga village to explore Braga Monastery, the largest in the Manang Valley.
Manang is a gorgeous town with phenomenal views of snow-capped peaks like Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and more. Here, you'll spend an extra day acclimatizing, with options to visit Gangarpurna Lake, Ice Lake, or Praken Gompa for incredible scenery.
After Manang, you'll enter high alpine valleys where the landscape changes dramatically. The dense forests give way to small shrubs, and you'll find yourself in an area similar to the Tibetan Plateau. You'll pass through Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi, and reach Thorong High Camp. From here, you'll cross the challenging Thorong La Pass at an elevation of 5,416m, offering amusing panoramas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
The Thorong Peak climbing portion of your journey begins after crossing Thorong La Pass. Instead of descending, you'll head towards Thorong Peak Base Camp for preparation and acclimatization. The climb involves navigating steep, snowy slopes with 35 to 45-degree inclines. Some sections are tricky so you must be careful while navigating between towering cliffs and snow-covered peaks. As you ascend, the scenery becomes increasingly breathtaking.
Reaching the summit of Thorong Peak rewards you with glorious sights of snowy peaks, vast glaciers, and wide-open valleys. You'll witness the majesty of Nilgiri Peak, Tilicho Peak, Dhaulagiri, and the Annapurna range. The summit also offers impressive scenes of the Mustang region and the beautiful Kali Gandaki Valley.
After your climb, you'll descend and follow the trail leading to Muktinath, a famous pilgrimage site. From here, you'll go to Jomsom, with a short detour to Kagbeni village. In Kagbeni, you can visit the ancient Red Monastery and witness the golden book of the Dalai Lama. The following day, you'll take a short flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, where you can explore the lake city or relax and reflect on your Thorong peak climbing journey. Your adventure concludes with a return to Kathmandu, either by flight or road, before your final flight home.
This Annapurna circuit with Thorong Peak climb package offers a unique blend of high-altitude trekking and peak climbing in Nepal. The Annapurna circuit trek is the perfect acclimatization for your ultimate goal: climbing Thorong Peak. Today, you walk from Chame to Lower Pisang, an old-style village on the Manang route. The scenery is beautiful, as snow-capped peaks stand tall above the rushing turquoise river. As you go higher, you'll notice how quickly the landscape changes. After a few hours of walking, you arrive at Bhratang. This small town is famous for its apples. You'll walk on a road cut into the side of a cliff, enjoying the incredible scenery.
During your hike, you'll see Swarga Dwari. This is a beautiful part of the mountain that has been naturally carved and looks like the side of a bowl. Local people believe it's a doorway to heaven. After crossing a bridge, you enter pine forests. The trail switches between hiking paths and roads until you reach Dhikur Pokhari.
Most trekkers recommend taking the high route from here. You leave the main road and cross another bridge. Before arriving at Lower Pisang, you'll see amazing sights of Annapurna II, IV, and III. If you hike 100 meters higher, you reach Upper Pisang. Both villages are typical quaint settlements in the Manang region. You can walk to Upper Pisang to explore. Today, you walk to Manang, the main town on the Annapurna circuit trek route. You'll take the higher route, passing through the villages of Ghyaru, Ngawal, and Braga. This path is more challenging but has excellent mountain vistas.
You start with a steep ascent from Upper Pisang. It's an arduous zigzag path up to Ghyaru. But in Ghyaru, you get a clear view of giant mountains like Annapurna II, III, and IV, Pisang, Tilicho, Gangapurna, etc. From here on, you'll see fewer trees and more small bushes.
As you walk on, you reach Ngawal. Here, you might start to feel the symptoms of altitude sickness. Remember to drink lots of water. After Ngawal, you'll see a horse field and a mani wall. Next is another long, steep climb up dusty hills across from Julu village. Then, you walk along a narrow ridge. You can witness Pisang Peak, Heaven's Gate, and more from here.
After this, you come to Braga village, famous for Braga monastery, the largest in Manang Valley. The monastery is ancient and has exquisite architecture, intricate woodwork, and an impressive collection of religious artifacts. After exploring the monastery, you head to Manang.

When trekking Annapurna Circuit, it's essential to take a rest day when you reach heights above 3,500m. Your body needs time to get used to the thin air at high places. There's less oxygen up high, which can make you feel uncomfortable. This is called altitude sickness.
Manang is a great place to rest for a day. There are many hiking options around, and you can see big, snowy mountains and glacier lakes. It's perfect to stay here for two nights. Here are some things you can do in Manang:
Hike to Gangapurna Lake: This is a popular choice. The lake is beautiful formed by the melting Gangapurna Glacier.
Hike to Ice Lake/ Kicho Lake hike (4,620m): This is a longer, harder hike from Manang. On the way, you'll see astonishing Annapurna and Pisang Peak. Relish the captivating sight of the lake and mountains. You can walk around the lake before getting back to the hotel.
Visit Praken Gompa (3,945m): This hike is shorter and easier. Praken Gompa is a small religious building hidden in the mountain above Manang. A Buddhist monk who lives there can bless you for your journey. The scenery from here is splendid. You can witness Annapurna IV, Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tarke Kang.
After a wonderful day in Manang and hiking nearby viewpoints, your body will be better prepared for the higher altitudes. This will help you cross Thorong La Pass and climb Thorong Peak later. Return to your teahouse and rest.

After two nights in Manang, you're acclimatized and ready to go higher. Before leaving Manang, you need to stop at an ACAP check post. Then, follow the signpost signaling the way to Thorong La. The trail is easy to follow but a challenging, high-altitude walk.
You start by climbing through Tengi, the upper part of Manang Valley. You'll see old stone houses, and from here, you climb steeply to Gunsang. Then you walk on narrow mountain paths where you might encounter the traffic jams of horses and yaks. Gunsang is a good place for a tea break. Here, you can see panoramic mountain vistas and watch eagles flying. The journey continues above the tree line. You cross scenic swing bridges and see yaks wearing red earrings. You'll also walk through an area with many goats.
The path is busy with people and animals carrying supplies to villages higher up, highlighting the region's remoteness. The trek concludes at Yak Kharka. You'll be much higher now and get a glimpse into the stark beauty of high-altitude Himalayan landscapes.

Today, you head toward the Thorong High Camp above Thorong Phedi. The trail is extremely quiet. You'll walk on primarily flat fields with splendid mountain vistas. After breakfast, you start with a gradual uphill climb.
On the way, you'll see Churi Ledar, a small settlement with lodges and tea shops. Like yesterday, you might see local people and horses carrying things on the trail. You'll cross a hanging bridge over a river. After the bridge, there's a steep and challenging path. At the end, you'll find a tea shop where you can rest briefly with impressive scenery.
Keep walking along the mountainside through the valley. You'll traverse an area where landslides happen, so be careful and move quickly here. There are more tea shops along the way where you can rest.
First, you reach Thorong Phedi, the final stop before Thorong High Camp. From here, it usually takes about an hour to reach High Camp. But it can take much longer if you're tired or feeling the effects of the high altitudes. You should take many breaks. Once you reach Thorong High Camp, enjoy the views and serenity of being so high up. Rest and prepare for tomorrow's big challenge: crossing Thorong La Pass.

Today is the most important day of your trip, as you'll climb Thorong Peak. Start before dawn to avoid strong winds at high altitudes. As you climb, you'll see the magnificent view of Kali Gandaki Valley.
The climbing journey begins with a steep one-hour descent. You'll go down a snowy slope 35° to 45° steep. The terrain can be challenging, requiring careful navigation and proper foot placement. At the bottom, there's a small, flat plateau where you can rest. Next, you'll go through a narrow path between towering cliffs and snow-covered peaks. This part can be dangerous, so you might have to use fixed ropes for safety. After this, you'll climb several large, inclining slopes.
As you go higher, the views become increasingly spectacular. Finally, after a lot of effort, you reach the summit of Thorong Peak. The panoramic vistas from the top are astounding. You can see the entire Annapurna range stretches out before you. To the north, you'll see the Tibetan Plateau and the distant peaks of the Himalayas.
After enjoying the summit, you'll descend to Muktinath Temple in Ranipauwa Village. The descending route is similar to the way up. You'll pass Thorong Peak Base Camp and Thorong La Pass. You might meet other trekkers going down to Muktinath after conquering Thorong La Pass. When you reach the Muktinath Valley, you'll pass the temple area. Essential Info
Physical Fitness
Many people have questions as to what level of physical fitness is required for visiting Nepal, and that is extremely reliant on what activity the visitor is engaging in. With that said, for a standard trek of moderate grading (Everest Base Camp Trek is an example of moderate) the daily activity will be 7-8 hours, and elevation will generally not exceed 5,500 meters. The day’s trekking is sustained and will involve both long steep climbs, and descents with a variety of terrain underfoot from well-trodden paths, to rocks covered with ice or snow. A typical day would include a number of climbs or descents of 500 meters or more, starting after breakfast, resting at lunch, then continuous trekking until arriving at the teahouse.
In preparation for the trekking and climbing, it is important to begin a training requirement at least 4 months before departing for Nepal. Three to four hours of aerobic exercise like running, walking, swimming, cycling & some gym work per week is the minimum and most will find it beneficial to add some basic strength training to their physical fitness routine. One of the best ways to prepare is to take practice hikes with a daypack roughly the same weight as what you will be taking on the trek. Do this only after a baseline of fitness has been reached. Moving fast is not the end goal, rather endurance is the focus, and will provide a more enjoyable and safe adventure.
Trekking and climbing Seasons in Nepal
There are two main seasons in which Nepal sees the most amount of visitors. Fall (September through November) being the most popular, and spring (March to May) coming in close behind. The summer months of June, July and August are the monsoon season and as such the trails are mostly washed out, and roads can sometimes be impassible due to landslide activates. Not to mention the view is non-existent. Still, there are a few places that lie in rain shadow areas and see significantly less rain if any at all, and summer can be a good time to visit these places.
Winter in Nepal is dry, with very cold nights where temperatures can drop to -20°C at the highest altitudes, but the days are pleasant and sunny. Additionally, the trails are much less crowded during this time of year. In Kathmandu, maximum daytime temperatures reach around 20°C.
Fall is the most popular because it’s after the monsoons, and the air is dry, the days are sunny, and everything is green in the lower valleys from the excessive rains. Spring is a popular choice because some rain returns, but the weather is generally warm and dry, and flowers are in bloom in the lower elevations.
Trekking Day
A typical trekking day begins with a cup of tea at around 6 in the morning. It is advised to pack your trekking gears in a duffle bag and essential supplies in your day pack in these early hours. After having breakfast, we begin the trek and head along the trail at around 8 am. The morning walk is designed to be longer as we begin with refreshed bodies and enthusiasm. Following a good morning’s walk, we make stop for lunch at around 11.30 am. The lunch involves group meals enjoying the vicinity around the stop. You can explore the surrounding or use the time according to your own consent. After resting for about an hour or two, we resume our trek to reach teahouse or camp by 3-4 pm. The afternoon walk is relatively shorter and can involve games and side trips as organized by the trekking guides. You also can enjoy breaks during the trek to relax, read or stroll around the area. You can converse with the local people and observe their lifestyle. Dinner is served around 7 in the evening to round off the day.
Meals and Accommodations
During the length of the trek, the accommodation style is commonly referred to as teahouse. These are family-run basic lodges that fill the role of the restaurant, meeting place, and boarding house for tourists. Electricity can be found in the rooms, which means one light bulb, and one or two outlets for charging electronics. The common areas are also lit by electricity. Teahouses may use solar, hydroelectric, or have electrical lines running into the village, so the commonality and availability of electricity may vary.
Most teahouses have private rooms, though if the trek is in a more remote or high altitude place dormitories are the norm. Each room has 1 or 2 single beds with basic bedding, and the bathroom is shared. Expect a mix of western and squat style toilets in the bathrooms.
Breakfast and dinner are taken at the teahouse and these lodges have large family style dining rooms centered on a stove to provide heat. The menu will have Nepali style western foods such as pasta, pizza, pancakes, burgers, and fries. Also on the menu is the traditional Dal Bhat meal. This is a lentil soup with rice and vegetable or meat curry. Most menus will also offer a smattering of local cuisine.
Travel Insurance
Many expeditions and tours require that travel insurance is purchased prior to arriving in Nepal, but other treks and tours may not. However, travel insurance is definitely an important consideration. There are a number of reasons to consider insurance. Firstly, it may be required, so check to see what is being asked for by the company. Second, Nepal is a landlocked country, and there are few direct flights. Travel in and out can encounter some disruptions and if purchasing insurance, make sure flight delays and cancellations are included. The next reason to choose insurance is that, though every safeguard is in place during your tour, there are always extenuating circumstances that may result in an accident. Read the fine print of insurance policies to ensure trekking or any other activity you are engaging in is covered, as some policies have stopped covering trekking in certain places. It is impossible to have a relaxing trip without the comfort of good insurance, so do the research and choose carefully.
Nepal Visa Entry Procedure
For entry into Nepal, there are visa requirements everyone (except Indian nationals) must complete before being allowed to pass through immigration. This is for air travel as well as overland transportation. Most visitors may obtain a visa to enter Nepal, however, there are exceptions. There are a number of entry points where you can obtain the visa upon arriving by land, but Tribhuvan International Airport is the only one for air transport.
Visa on Arrival Tourist Visa
Three options are available for entry
15-day single entry: US $30
30-day single entry: US $50
90-day multiple entries: US $125
Please have a passport valid for at least 6 months from the time of entry, and have cash ready, preferably in US dollars, though there are other currencies Nepal Immigration accepts. If you are entering via overland, you must have US cash and 3 passport photos. For arrival by air, the kiosks at the airport take your picture for you.
For the most up to date list of exceptions for visa on arrival or to obtain the most current visa information, visit the Nepal Department of Immigration website.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
Acute Mountain Sickness is usually seen in un-acclimatized people shortly after ascent to high altitudes. The condition occurs due to the thinning of air as the altitude increases. The condition, if not taken seriously and treated immediately, can be life-threatening and its symptoms can be seen generally above 3000 meters. Some of the symptoms of AMS are nausea, vomiting, tiredness, shortness of breath and cerebral pain. The treks are designed to properly acclimatize you to the change in high altitude climate and sufficient precautionary measures too are taken to take utmost caution. We also equip our staffs with cell phones and satellite phones in occurrence of any emergency cases. We are greatly driven to keep the safety and security of our clients as our foremost concern.
Drinking Water
Water is essential for life, and clean water is imperative while on holiday. When choosing to visit less developed countries it is a concern that all travelers should consider. A few options are available when trekking or traveling in Nepal that will mitigate any chances of drinking contaminated water which could cause disruption of an otherwise fun adventure. The first consideration to take into account is that tap water should not be ingested. That even means when brushing your teeth. Most will choose to buy bottled water and if doing so make sure the cap has not been opened previously. Plastic bottle refuse is a problem, and with that being said there are other options on the market to assist in making water drinkable. Your local outdoor store can help with choosing what option might be best to use in conjunction with a reusable bottle. Your guide can also steer you to water that has been filtered and purified so ask him or her what is available.
Arrival Instruction
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our company representatives are stationed to welcome you to the country. We request you to carefully look for your name being held by our representatives following the events upon landing. The representatives are responsible to escort you to your hotel in Kathmandu. You will see men offering you to carry luggage and take you to your destination as you exit the airport. We request you to pay no attention to these people and follow the designated representatives and follow their instructions. You will also need to keep an eye on your luggage and belongings to avoid any complications.
Fantastic Trip
My daughter and I did the 15 day Everest base camp trek. Very happy with our choice of Nepal Ascent Treks. Sittal was very responsive in answering all my questions before the trip and really took care of us during the trip. Our guide, Deepak, and porter, Bissnu, were awesome and very attentive. We felt we typically had the best rooms at the nicest teahouses. Kathmandu sightseeing was very personalized. The little extras provided by Nepal Ascent Treks – sim card, duffel bag, nice shirt (not cheap T-shirt), and massage were great. Would highly recommend Nepal Ascent Treks!
